Changing Times: A Precursor to Something Big!

16 03 2014

Before reading through this post, I want you to take just a moment and complete this exercise. I want you to think what word, or two, would you use to characterize society today? Permissive? Godless? Materialistic? Decaying?

It seems the magnetic lure of worldly pleasures, such as power, greed, sex, money, etc., has skewed our moral compass and set us off on the wrong path. Society, and what we deem socially and morally acceptable, has changed drastically over the past couple of generations.

The purpose of this post is neither to condemn nor condone activities. Its purpose is three-fold-1) to illustrate our slide toward Godlessness by our acceptance and tolerance of issues which were once considered unacceptable and intolerable. 2) It is to show how moral decline has been foreseen for thousands of years, and most importantly, 3) to show that the fulfillment of prophecy in Scripture, revealed through this decline, is leading up to one big-time event-the second coming of Christ.

Morals in Decline

I lifted the following statistics from an article in USA Today on February 26, 2014. The article, titled Talkin’ ‘bout my generations: Opinions on social issues shift, paints a picture of a changing society.

  • Same-sex marriage: 1996 Gallup poll 27% favor, 68% opposed. A 2013 USA Today poll showed 55% favor and 40% oppose;
  • Cohabitation: 1981 ABC News/Washington Post poll found 45% disapproved and 40% approved. A 2007 USA Today/Gallup poll found 55% approved and 27% disapproved.

In the article, sociologist Daniel Liether of Cornell University stated, “We’re entering a period of massive social change.” The article went on to say how baby boomers are dying off and will be replaced over the next 20-30 years by a younger, more permissive, society. In other words, the changes we are seeing will only get worse. I feel sorry for young parents raising children today.

Now, compare your earlier thoughts (assuming you followed directions) on society with what Paul wrote to his protégé, Timothy, two thousand years ago.

From 2 Timothy, chapter 3, verses 1-5: You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that! (from New Living Translation)

Thou Shalt not Lie!

The decay isn’t just in sexually related issues either. People seem to be more hate-filled today than forty or fifty years ago. There’s nothing new about stretching the truth to support your argument but it seems now that many today, especially liberal politicians, will stop at nothing to promote their cause. Look at some of the lies we have heard from the likes of Barrack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Kathleen Sebelius, et al. These people will say anything to cover up a lie, get a bad bill passed or get re-elected. ObamaCare. Benghazi. Internal Revenue targeting conservatives. Need I say more?

Look at how Christians are treated today. In many parts of the world, if you participate in any Christian activities you will be locked up or murdered. In our own country there are efforts to silence Christians, if not eradicate Christianity, entirely. Liberals in Washington D.C. and Hollywood will bend over backwards not to offend Muslims, but Christians are fair game.

In Matthew 24, beginning at verse 4, Jesus told His disciples, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah.’ They will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately. Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. But all this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come.

“Then you will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because you are my followers. 10 And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. 11 And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people. 12 Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come.untitled

It’s All in THE Plan

I don’t believe in coincidence. I believe in purpose. All things have been preordained and, therefore, happen for a reason. The reason we are seeing changes as we are, is because God planned it this way. That’s not to say the change is caused by God. No, God gave us, mankind, the free will to decide for ourselves what we think is right and how we should live our lives. In doing so, He knew what the eventual outcome would be and we are seeing that outcome revealed right before our eyes. He told us Jesus would one day return to take His children to a heavenly home and set up His Kingdom. So far, He has kept every promise He has made so there’s no reason to think He won’t keep this one. So take heart believers and beware non-believers because one day soon, perhaps in our lifetime, perhaps not, Jesus will return. If you don’t already know Christ, I’d like to introduce you.
