Captain Sam

24 08 2010

My first-born son recently told a story that comes awfully close to being the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. I don’t think any writer can do it justice, least of all, me. It’s one of those things that is better heard than read. Still, I’m going to take a crack at passing the story on to you guys.

My son is a professional firefighter with a nearby municipality. One of the captains with this particular fire department is known for the guttural sounds he frequently makes while at work-something along the lines of “unghhh!’ He might be standing in a room or around the station and out of nowhere comes, “Unghhh!”

Firefighters might be in the rest room or outside washing the truck and suddenly, from nowhere comes, “unghhh!” They, then, know Captain Sam is around.

And, although Captain Sam is quite capable as a captain, he doesn’t always seem to be completely alert and aware of his whereabouts.

At a structure fire one day, at which there were several engines from different stations on scene, Captain Sam jumped into the cab of the wrong engine. The driver, who was a complete stranger, was sitting behind the wheel.

“Unghhh!” he said as he looked at the unknown driver, “Who are you?”

“I’m the driver; who are you?”

“I’m Captain Sam.”

Then Captain Sam looked toward the rear of the cab and saw a Dalmatian, the other company’s station mascot. Captain Sam looked at the dog, then looked back at the driver. Then back at the dog.

“Unghhh”, he said, “How long we had that dog”?

That is, to date, one of the funniest stories I’ve heard. Even reading it makes me giggle. 🙂
